How to Make a Mid-Year Career Change 2019

How to Make a Mid-Year Career Change

You’ve probably heard of the 7-Year Itch when it comes to relationships, but did you know that there’s a similar name for that yearning to change jobs halfway through the year? The Mid-Year Itch comes around with the colder months, which also signal that tax time is near.

It’s hard to get out of your nice warm bed in the morning, the gloomy weather can be depressing, you get home when it’s dark and tax time makes you confront your satisfaction (or lack thereof) with your income. These little things often add up to a rise in people looking to change jobs, or even careers, entirely.

If you’re feeling the Mid-Year Itch, and you’re sure you want to listen to the urge to find a new job, here are a few tips to make searching for your next role easier.

Refresh your resume

You need an impressive resume to get your foot in the door at any job, and it’s especially important when you’re looking to change careers. You need to really sell yourself and show prospective employers why you’re the best choice for the position.

Our recent blog on Transferable Skills has some great information about framing your existing skills in a way that applies to what the potential company is looking for. You don’t have to stay within the same industry if you don’t want to!

Sign up to online job sites

These sites are really useful for finding job opportunities, and many of them are free too. You can usually also sign up to receive notifications for when certain roles in certain industries are posted, allowing you to quickly apply for them.

LinkedIn and other social media sites also have job boards now, and there’s even a portal for Australian Government roles hosted by the government itself. You also have the well-know job portals like Seek, Indeed, etc.

Never stop networking

The saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” isn’t the be-all and end-all of job hunting, but it definitely helps! Connecting with people in your industry, as well as others, often presents unique job opportunities that you otherwise wouldn’t have come across.

Whether it’s in person at events or online through sites like LinkedIn, networking is invaluable for anyone looking to change jobs or careers. It’s another way to get noticed and stick in the minds of those who are hiring.
