Dear Jobseeker,

I know things are tough right now.  I know that you’re doing everything you can.

You might feel like it’s all too much.  You may have even reached the point where you’re wondering why you aren’t good enough.  It can be made even harder if you have friends or family who have managed to find work, while you’re still applying.

I want to tell you right now; you are good enough.  You have the skills, experience, and determination. 

You are employable.

You will find a job.

The problem isn’t you.  There are currently hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their jobs due to COVID.  The situation is so widespread I felt it needed to be addressed, and that you needed to be encouraged. Because you can do this.

I want you to look at your resume.  Read through that document that is a compilation of your skills, training, experience, and accomplishments.

Any time that you don’t get the job, and that little voice of despair and frustration tells you that you aren’t good enough, read it again.  Read your list of talents and qualifications and remind yourself that you are good enough. You are so valuable as a person and as an employee.  It’s only a matter of time before you find work

The job market is currently highly competitive.  It’s estimated that almost 1 million Australians are out of work due to COVID, and there are currently only around a hundred thousand new positions to apply for. Employers are being flooded with applications for one or two job openings. 

How to survive Job Searching through a pandemic in 2020.

 There are plenty of potential reasons that you didn’t get the job:

• They were inundated and had to cull applications
• They decided to hire internally
• Another candidate had a unique skill (that put them in the lead/above the competition)
• The hirer connected with one of the candidates
• They had to put the role on hold or freeze hiring
• They already had someone in mind for the position

It’s not that they thought you couldn’t fill the role, or that you weren’t good enough for the job.  There was just someone else who they felt was a better ‘fit’ for the position or team.  Sometimes these choices are exceedingly difficult for the hirer to make, especially with so many suitable applicants.  At the end of the day though, the decision must be made, and they can only hire a limited number of people.

Have patience, be persistent, and keep applying.

Where possible, ask for feedback, but don’t let it shake your confidence.  The hirer may not always have the time to respond, but it’s worth it to ask.

Keep knocking, continue to put your best foot forward, and a door will open to you.
